Health Benefits of Aronia Melanocarpa

  1. Aronia fruit, like other well-known health-promoting fruits, is a rich source of red, purple, blue and even black pigments called anthocyanins, which are known for their antioxidant activity and are part of a larger group of bioactive flavonoids found in all fruits and vegetables.  Aronia is related to the blueberry, but has an even higher level of protective antioxidant activity.  Review of the literature revealed that Aronia has no known side effects.  The follow is a brief summary of our unique bioactive formula.

  2. Phenolic content provides a high radical scavenging activity.  Proanthocyanidins and anthocyanins are outstanding metal chelators and form complexes with iron and copper.  The presence of free iron and copper ions catalyzes free radical reactions.  Additionally, the phenolic compounds of Aronia Melanocarpa in vitro binds bivalent transition metals and effectively reduces the concentration of these cations and thus the extent of pro-oxidant activity.

Aronia Melanocarpa decreased lipid oxidation and enhanced the activity of antioxidant defense enzymes in animal models.
Matsumoto reported that the red pigment fraction of Aronia berries composed of cyanidins is a potent scavenger of DPPH radicals in both in vitro and in vivo systems.

Antioxidant effects also are found in humans, where a dietary supplementation of Aronia Melanocarpa limited the exercise-induced oxidative damage to red blood cells.
